Four Easy Suggested Steps to Nominate Your HOBY Leader

1. Announcement: Be sure all sophomores in your school learn about the HOBY Leadership Seminar. Invite them to apply. Display the HOBY promotional poster (included in the HOBY packet mailed to your principal in September) in a prominent place and encourage teachers to announce the program in classes.

2. Student Application: Reproduce the Student Application Form enclosed in the Nomination Mailing packet. Give copies to sophomore home room teachers or to teachers of sophomores. The Nomination Mailing packet will be sent to all high school principals in the middle of September. If you do not receive a packet by the end of October, contact your local seminar through our Contact Form.

Announce a deadline in your school for forms to be returned to the individual you designate as your school's HOBY Program Advisor. Be sure to allow time for interviewing your final candidates and for certification by the principal so that the mid-November deadline can be met.

3. Selection of Finalists: You and your HOBY Program Advisor should set up your own criteria for selecting finalists so that there is no discrimination on the basis of race, religion, sex or other factors.

Emphasis for student selection should be placed on incentive and demonstrated leadership ability rather than scholastic achievement.

We suggest you name a school selection committee, under the direction of your HOBY Program Advisor, to interview five to ten finalists and select your best representative as the "HOBY Ambassador" from your school. One alternate should be selected as well. Keep the name of your alternate on file in your office for reference. Please include your alternate's information as indicated on your Official Representative Form.

4. Official Representative Form: Your HOBY Program Advisor should transfer the information from the student application of the 10th grader you select to the Official Representative Form in the Nomination Mailing packet. Please type the form and closely follow the other directions for preparation. Do not rewrite any of the student's answers.

The principal, the student and the student's parent or guardian should sign the Official Representative Form, and the school should mail or fax the form as shown below, or submit the information online at HOBY’s web site.
